This is hard....

Its been a while since I have written a blog. This one is not weight related, but very personal.  Some of you that know me know that my best friend, Kathy is battling breast cancer.  Well, she is losing her battle. Its easier for me to write this blog rather than talk about in person without crying about it.
Kathryn Grau Caviness (my bestie)

Bad news is here. She had a MRI and PET scan done this last week. She called to tell me that the cancer has moved into her spinal cord.  She was still fighting the battle of having fluid and cancer in her lungs along with cells in her liver. At this time, Hospice care has been called and now all treatments will be stopped.  The time to prepare for her to leave this world is inevitable.

Yesterday, I broke down and sobbed in my husband's arms and fell into a small state of depression. I cried and slept most of the day. I am thankful for a very understanding husband who left me alone while trying to deal with this.

Jamie Barkes Pursely 1975-2011 www.lovingpink.com
A year and a half ago a high school friend, Jamie lost her battle to this horrible disease. This morning Jamie’s husband, daughter, family and friends are representing her in Kansas City for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  Even though I couldn’t make it to the race, I went for a memorial run with my husband for her and my friend this morning. It was an odd route that we have never ran.  We started at our home and ran through a neighborhood close to ours, then through the old Rochester Cemetery.  It felt so calm and serene. On our way back all of these thoughts of my best friend losing her life to cancer came rushing through my head. At the end of our route, we had to tackle going up a huge hill. My husband while in his own world trying to get up this hill, I pictured my friends at the top cheering me on.  My heart raced and I pushed harder and harder to reach them.  As I got to the top, the images of them disappeared and tears streamed down my face.  My heart rate was so high, I had to stop running and catch my breath. Within this small time frame, I felt this overwhelming feeling of comfort and relief. Both women who many of of love are not or will be not any longer.  We still have our memories and bits and pieces of  these wonderful women personified through their beautiful children.

I feel honored to have known these two women.  Jamie is gone, Kathy is still here for now, but I don’t know for how long.

You will always be remembered and never forgotten!!! Kathy, you have been my best friend for 15 years.  We have done everything together. We met our loves and had our babies at the same time. We have been a part of everything together!  I love you to the moon and back and always will!!!

Thank to everyone for all of their prayers and support.

As Jamie would say....Much love,

Christy

Ultimate Reset Week 3: Restore & Post Reset Week

Week 3 Restore:

I was so glad to be done with the detox week. It really challenged me not only with the Detox packets but the food menu itself. So for week 3 instead of taking the yucky detox packets I took the Revitalize capsule along with the other supplements from Week 1. This week’s menu was more appealing to me and was supposed to be about adding in more fruits and veggies to put new healthy things in to replace what was removed during the detox week. This was a strict vegan eating week. Grains were optional.

Not only was I excited about this being a good week of eating, but I was also excited that it was the last week. I was really starting to feel great. I gained a ton of energy back and wasn’t feeling so tired. I could definitely tell my pants and clothes were feeling loose. I had much more muscle definition, especially in my stomach and Ab area. People would mention that I looked leaner and smaller, which was great!!

The week went by fairly quickly. I was excited to start working out again. I did attempt to go to kickboxing on this last day. I had to take it easy, as I still didn’t have much strength. I modified when I needed too. It felt great to get back into working out. I was also in a wedding all day on the 21st day, June 30, 2012. I still stuck to my guns and ate my healthy lunch and ate a salad for dinner at the wedding reception. I was happy that I was able to get through it all.

For this last week I lost another 1.6 pounds! This is the lowest I have ever seen my scale go. Woo hoo!! Throughout this whole program, I lost a total of 5.2lbs and 4.75 inches. I was able to break through my plateau that I had for the last 6 months. Before the reset, my body felt tight and bloated at times. Not anymore!! I went from 133.8 to 128.6. I am still currently maintaining at 128-129. I weighed in this morning (July 9, 2012) at 128.2.

Post Reset week:

This last week post reset was quite hard. The holiday in the middle of the week and it also being my daughter’s birthday was quite a struggle. The first few days of eating were not challenging at all. I still followed the diet not really incorporating meat and sticking to the vegan diet plan. On the 4th of July, I OVER indulged with smoked meats and sweets. My tummy was upset the next few days and I seriously paid for that over indulgence. I spent some major time in the middle of the night in the bathroom. Sorry If that was too much information for you. The tummy aches lingered for several days after. I went back to eating more of the vegan lifestyle and my body is thanking me. I don’t know if I will be able to ever go back to the way that I ate before. It wasn’t ever done in a bad way, but I feel my body is more sensitive to things that I place in it now.

When it came to working out, I noticed my strength is still not there. The weight levels that I had pushed previously are not the same. I am okay with that. I felt that I was going a little too heavy and I needed to cut back. I was worried about not working out for the 3 weeks and having to regain my cardiovascular back, but I never did. I felt more energized and ready to go than I ever had. I have exercise induced asthma and I haven’t had to take my inhaler at all. I feel my muscles are rested and more flexible. I could extend more into my stretches that I ever could before.

I totally would do the Ultimate Reset again. Once a year would be a great investment, but I would probably aim for the slower activity months like January or February. It’s crazy to think of how much weight was lost plus how much better I feel, but I would highly recommend doing it to anyone. If you think you are fit and healthy, don’t think that you can’t benefit from doing this program, because you definitely will.

I never thought I would get out so much from doing a program like this. I thought the way that I ate and worked out was perfectly fine. This Reset showed me what I needed to do to live healthy and feel great from here on out.

If you would like more information feel free to head over to my Beachbody Ultimate Reset page and check out the different packages. It truly is a great experience. Your body will thank you.

Ultimate Reset Recap Week 2: Release

All I can say about week 2, is WOW! This week was the RELEASE phase or the detox phase. The menu transitioned to a vegetarian style menu and the detox supplement was added in to be taken 3 times per day.

I have to admit that this week definitely was not my favorite at all.  I was not enthused with the menu choices nor was I really fond of the not-so-good tasting detox supplement that we had to take.

I found myself quite hungry this week and full of temptation. I think mainly because of the limited menu choices. We could mainly have fruit and a Shakeology for breakfast. Lunch included the everlasting microgreen salad and dinner was filled with many eclectic choices, like mediterranean roast beets, which I am not a big fan of. A super yummy sweet potato and roasted red pepper bisque and edamame and roasted corn succotash was on the menu and they were quite tasty.  I think my main problem with this menu was that most days for lunch we had to have the micro green salad which is a great salad, but when you have to eat it 4 out of the 7 days, it gets quite boring.

I didn't lose much weight this week. Only -0.6lbs.  I would have thought the weight loss would have been more prominent, considering this is the detox phase.  I will say that I have much more energy, especially when I first wake up in the morning. My acne prone skin looks and feels so much better. It hasn't been oily, even in this hot weather we have been having.

Even with the weight loss slowed and knowing it is merely a by-product of using the Ultimate Reset, I think I have lost inches.  This week the week went by at work and as I taught kickboxing (still no rigorous workouts), I received many compliments about my size. My husband even made a comment one morning about how "small" I looked.  I see myself all day every day, so I don't think I notice it as much, but must be a good thing people are noticing a change. I know I feel so much better.

I am looking forward to this last and final phase.....RESTORE.  The supplements are ones that I am used to taking and are in pill form. YAY for this! This phase is mainly focused on vegan eating, which will be hard. I do miss eating some meat. I miss eating greek yogurt as well.  With the reset, all of the menu choices are full of herbal spices and a very savory.  I miss having a small sweet treat every once in a while. Seven more days to go......

Ultimate Reset Week 1 Recap: Reclaim

This last week I started the Beachbody Ultimate Reset. First off, what is the Ultimate Reset?
As I describe it to some people, they think of it as a cleanse. The Beachbody Ultimate Reset is not really a cleanse in the way that you would probably think of. Normally when people think of a cleanse they picture themselves running to the toilet all day because of harsh processed chemicals flushing your body out. This is not the case with this program. This is not a starvation diet. There aren't any harsh laxatives and you will not be running  to the bathroom every five minutes with stomach cramps. Your body will not be deprived but instead you will be providing your body with all of the nutrients that it has been craving and missing. The Ultimate Reset is not a diet. It’s a 21-day detox program that works to restore your body. It’s designed to help you release years of those accumulated toxins and restore your body to back to its “factory settings." Sounds pretty good, huh? More about the program….

The Beachbody Ultimate Reset is a complete, 3-phase daily program that provides you with everything you need to Reclaim your body’s natural balance, Release the harmful materials you may be storing within you, and Restore your system to its maximum health.

Phase 1: Reclaim
In Phase 1 you will Reclaim your body, balance your body’s inner chemistry and get it ready for change.
Phase 2: Release
In Phase 2 you will Release the toxic compounds stored within your tissues that are clogging your cells. This will wash away years of impurities.
Phase 3: Restore
In this Phase you will Restore your metabolism back to it’s maximum efficiency while fortifying your body with the nutrients, enzymes, and probiotics it needs to maintain healthy performance in the future.

So here is a recap of my week one….Reclaim

During this week you slowly remove foods like red meat and dairy from your diet.  These types of food put stress on your digestive system and make you more acidic overall.  You rehydrate your body with about a gallon of water a day, reactivate sluggish cell function and shift your body's pH level to a healthier alkaline state.  Acidity can weaken your body's functions and predispose you to disease states. There are 4 supplements you take throughout the day:  Mineralize which adds natural minerals needed by the body, Optimize which promotes healthy metabolism and effective body functions, Oxygenize which provides supplemental oxygen to the body, and Alkalinize which helps maintain alkalinity.
So by the end of week one you've eliminated animal proteins and dairy.  I never was much of a dairy person. I drink almond and coconut milk in place of cow milk.  I take in some animal proteins, but it wasn't hard to give it up. Most people have caffeine headaches that I didn't experience. While on this program you have to drink a lot of water. On day one, I felt bloated and water logged. I probably overcompensated with water so I wouldn't feel any hunger pangs. I felt a little foggy and light headed. My body ached as if I had worked out hard for a few days. While on this program, hard rigorous workouts shouldn't be done since the body is working hard on the inside. Walking and Yoga are suggested, but nothing else. I thought this would be the hardest thing for me, but the way my body ached the first few days as the toxins were leaving, I was definitely OKAY with not doing any exercise whatsoever.
By days 5-7 I was waking up in the morning feeling like I had a ton of energy!  I was not getting any more sleep than usual, but I felt revitalized. Before I had started the Reset I had gotten into some old bad habits of picking at foods throughout the day, crackers, almonds, sweets, etc and it was definitely making me feel sluggish. On day 7, I felt enough energy to attempt a workout. I went to kickboxing, but modified a lot of the moves and didn't try to get my heart rate up too much. It felt good to do a little something. I missed my class terribly.
During these first seven days, I lost 3.2 lbs.  At the beginning I was felt bloated, but I now feel slim and light.  My muscles feel tight and toned. One great thing about this program is that I'm actually consuming more calories than I normally would for weight loss. The whole program is full of clean healthy whole foods.
Speaking of wholesome food, HOLY MOLY. The Ultimate Reset comes with a 3 week menu, shopping lists and recipes, including a cooking dvd.  Some menu choices were a roasted root medley, zucchini-cashew soup, nori rolls with tempeh and veggies, and salads with homemade dressings.  If in a pinch, I have been able to substitute the Vegan Tropical Strawberry Shakeology. I've been pleasantly surprised at how much food there is at meals. Sometimes, I feel there is too much and I hate to waste it. I didn't think I would like the crazy prep time of all the meals, but I actually enjoy it.
I am used to eating 5 times a day, but during the Reset you eat 3 times a day so that has been an adjustment for me. The hardest part of this whole program is taking the supplements. They have to be timed correctly throughout the day which when life gets crazy, there are times that you have to just stop and take them to make sure you get them in. This is still something I am getting used too. As I look ahead to next week I am wondering how I will feel and what this next phase will bring.  On to week two…..Restore…..  I will keep you posted.

Real People, Real Stories

I was inspired to write this blog from my friend Megan B. She is a fellow Beachbody Coach that wrote a blog and she wanted real success stories from real people. I offered my story to her and I felt what she wrote was amazing and inspiring, so I thought I would do the same.

You hear a lot from me about my success with my weight loss journey, but sometimes you need to see and hear the struggles from others who have given up many hours of time, sweat and tears to jump on board with becoming healthy and fit. We always think it’s easy to convince ourselves that losing a dramatic amount of weight is next to impossible. This attitude forces many of us to give up before we have even started.

I know weigh loss looks so dreadful that many of us don’t want to change our lifestyles in the hopes of dropping a few pounds. The beginning of this process requires lots of dedication and hard work following a strict diet, and finding workout plans that fit our needs and schedules. I have some fabulous friends who I have asked to share their struggles and accomplishments with their lifestyle changes. They were all asked the same three questions. None of their answers were edited. Just copied and pasted as they were sent to me.

Let’s start off with Dan and Chelle D.  They are a wonderful happily married couple who decided to take this journey on together.

Before

What was it that made you decide you needed to change something?
Dan: I have always been overweight, but always was able to still do the things that I should be able to do for a man my age.  As I past 35, I started to notice that I was not the “athlete” that I once was and that I was unable to do the things that I wanted to do.  It was harder for me to play with me son.  It was harder for me to do the things I should be able to do.  I attributed it to my weight.  Joint pain, fatigue, overall lethargy were all creeping up on me and it was time to go a different direction.
Chelle: I became incredibly interested in childhood nutrition, school lunches, homemade meals, and organic products and figured if I wanted to encourage my child to eat healthy, I needed to lead by example.
What was/is your biggest weakness or struggle?
Dan:   I love food.  There is no doubt about it.  I have always loved food and will always love food.  The worse the food is for me, the more I love it.  For most of my life, events have always been planned around food.  Celebrations have included going out to dinner, or having ice cream as a treat.  Finding ways to enjoy life without things being centered around food has and will continue to be a struggle.
Chelle: Trying to exercise on my own was the hardest. Finally, my friend Dallas and I became early morning workout buddies and that got me going in the mornings. Next my husband jumped on board which kept me going, and now we are part of a workout class with lots of people to motivate me. At this point I feel bad on days I DON’T get to go to class.
What have you accomplished this far? What has helped you the most?
Dan: I have lost 82 pounds so far on my journey.  I started out weighing 388 pounds, having a 58 inch waistline.  I now weigh 306 pounds and have trimmed down to a 48 inch waistline. Without a doubt, the reason I’ve been successful is because of my wife.
May 2012
Chelle.    So far, I’ve gone from 282 pounds to 213. I’m only 10 pounds away from my first mini-goal (to no longer be considered “obese”), and my ultimate goal is to be around 165 pounds. It’s slow and steady. Nothing about what we are doing is fast. I want this to always be a lifestyle change, therefore we don’t use any diet tricks…just eating clean and having fun growing a garden, cooking, and produce shopping, and exercising. Nights that used to be watching TV are now nights that we go on bike rides, play tennis, and basketball as a family. The best part to me is knowing my son knows about nutrition labels, how to make healthy choices at the snack counter at the movie theatre, and that his Mom and Dad are losing weight because we want to have as much time as we can with him. The things that have helped me the most is my support group, seeing how much easier life gets with every pound lost, and the desire to be a good role model for my son.

Next up is my friend Elizabeth H.  Our weight loss story is similar. I have known her for many years and I know she struggled recently with constant stopping and starting new “diet” plans. She was a yo-yo dieter like me. She wanted a quick fix and it finally hit her that quick and easy is not sustainable. Some people need that daily motivation to push them through the day and I know Elizabeth is one of them. For her, a quick motivational tweet or post is all I know I need to give her to keep her pushing play or hitting the gym.

What was it that made you decide you needed to change something?
I hated when I looked at myself in the mirror, I was disappointed in myself for getting to this point.
Work in progress
2012

What was/is your biggest weakness or struggle?

Food. I love food--I do, and I know that it's OK to eat now. In the beginning I wasn't feeding myself enough to fuel my body and hit a standstill and almost gave up on myself again. I don't think when I eat anymore. I know my body will thank me later when I have ridiculously high burns and I can keep going.

What have you accomplished this far? What has helped you the most?
Since January I have lost 11lbs--I know it might not seem like much but it's been hard--I've lost major inches and I can tell that I am making progress--still have 13 more to go--but I'll get there! I have such a great support system from my family, friends, and MFP (myfitnesspal) friends I don't know how I could do it without them. I have wonderful support from my husband-to-be Kevin and my main source of  motivation and inspiration is Mrs. Christy Weiler.

Another great story is from Bridget A.  I met her in Combat Fit class. I have gotten to know her and her family. She is a super mom who combines Tae Kwon Do, Insanity, P90X and is now an avid runner.

What was it that made you decide you needed to change something?
I decided I needed to change something when I became sick of looking at pictures of myself.  Also I do a lot of sparring at taekwondo and kept having asthma attacks after just one match.  I knew I needed to get my cardio to the point where I could spar without wanting to die.
What was/is your biggest weakness or struggle?

My biggest weakness is still sweets.  I really like to stress eat jelly beans or any kind of candy.  The funny part is that I didn’t really want or even eat candy before I started dieting.
What have you accomplished this far? What has helped you the most?
Size 12
I have lost almost 21 points.  I was never able to figure out how many inches because I never measured in the same place I don’t think.  More importantly I went from a size 12 to a size 8 which was my goal.  The support in the Combat Fit Group combined with logging everything (and support) in MyFitnessPal has been a huge help.  I never really wanted to track calories before but MyFitnessPal makes it really easy.  I have logged on for 140 days so far!
Lastly I give your Kathy D. While she is the oldest out of all of us, she is one spunky gal. I absolutely love her. She is the most heartwarming and giving person I have ever met. While Kathy doesn’t have any photos to share, she has some inspiring answers.

What was it that made you decide you needed to change something?
I honestly don't know that there was a single "aha" moment.  But throughout the past several years I have gone on and off several exercise and diet plans.  I seem to get off kilter when there's a big change in my schedule or some other event sets me back.  I think what I've finally learned is those changes and events can no longer be an excuse to fall back into old habits of poor eating and little to no exercise.
What was/is your biggest weakness or struggle?
As I've gotten older, it is just harder to drop weight.  My metabolism has really slowed down and I simply cannot consume as many calories -- but I still love to eat! (And drink!)
What have you accomplished this far? What has helped you the most?
What has helped me the most is having a true network of people who are encouraging and supportive.  And I really like the hard work that is a part of combat fit.  I like the routine, yet it is hardly "routine".
What great stories, right? The main focus on this blog is that even though our struggles and motivators are all different, we all are striving to reach one ultimate goal: to be happy, healthy and fit. All of my friends and me included realized putting in the dedication of working out; eating right, making things fun and finding a connection with groups of people with similar goals is what keeps us going.

Being an inspiration to all of my friends and family is what keeps me going.
Will you be someone's inspiration and motivator?
What will it take to get you started?

Spring Cleaning

This isn’t much a of weight loss blog today, but it fits into how my life has changed over this last year. Several instances over the last fews week has prompted me to write about it.

Spring is finally here, even though these last few days have felt like summer in April, it’s definitely here!! I love spring time. I love how everything comes back to life, flowers, grass, trees, and the songs of birds, even the bugs, hay fever and allergies. Most of us around this time of year do quite a bit of spring cleaning, whether it’s de-cluttering our house, changing out our wardrobes, as well as cleaning up and prepping the flower beds or vegetable garden for fresh plantings. This can also be the time when we re-evaluate outdated relationships.

During this life changing journey that I have been through this last year, I feel I have found my support group; my true group of friends and valued relationships that I want to have in my life. This group may consist of just a few people, but these are the people that have stood by me this last year. They have had to withstand hearing me bitch and moan about the scale not moving, how sore my body is, or how strict my diet needs to be. At the same time they are still offering support and motivation keeping me on track and not letting me lose focus of my goal. These are a group of people I have found that I can easily relate too.

For me to move on into my next phase of my life, I think it’s time for some “spring cleaning.”  It’s time to get rid of, clean up and re-organize some past relationships. I am in no way insinuating that people are disposable or dispensable.  I think all people are beautiful souls who are priceless.  Remember that old saying, “People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.” It’s so true, but there can be an expiration date on friendships and eventually they can come to an end. I don’t want to say that some friendships aren’t worth fighting for, but if everything has been done to try and salvage it with no success, then the fight should end. Not everyone is meant to stay in our lives forever. I believe people come in and out of our lives just to teach us a life lesson and then move on.  This is perfectly acceptable.

The one thing that initiated this “cleaning” is watching my best friend battle and continue to fight through Breast Cancer. We went through so many ups and downs and emotional events occurring and re-occurring. Even in her darkest moments, she never took anything for granted. When she cut her hair because it was falling out, or when it was completely lost for the first time, trying on wigs, sitting through multiple doctors’ appointments, radiation and chemo treatments, attempting to go on shopping trips with last minute cancellations because she was tired, she and I still had our bond. When the cancer was gone for a while, we rejoiced!! Thanking God for all that he had done. Recently, we found out that the cancer came back, which she fell into a huge state of depression. Feeling lost and not knowing what to do, I stepped back and let her be alone. After a while, she rose up out of it and didn’t let it bother her, at least on the outside. Right now, she is loving life and living it to the fullest. She amazes me every day with her strength and determination to live each day as if it was her last. Our relationship giving ratio is 50/50. It should always be that way and I love her for that.  Throughout our 14 year friendship, times got busy; our lives changed with marriage, jobs, and kids. Sure there were times that we felt that we grew apart but we always were able relate back to each other, grow and progress with our relationship.  This is what real friendships and relationships are all about. At some point, if we are no longer relating to one another, we have to let go, or find a way that we can relate.

I feel the ball is in my court and nobody is in charge, but me. It is best for me to shut that door and make room for others that are willing to be more balanced in the give-and-take approach and who I can relate to more and to learn and grow with. Some people might not think that this approach seems fair, but it is what it is. If they were ever a true friend, they would notice the change and try and overcome it. For those of you that I will be letting go, you probably won’t even know it, since we rarely talk now. Why fight for something that is not there?  It's simply a memory. I will continue to send love and well-being from afar and please know that you were a part of my life for a reason or a season, but I am and will be committed to those who will hang throughout my lifetime! On to the next phase of my life…..
