My transformation Story

Why isn't this working?

Some of you probably ask yourself this all the time, " Why isn't this working?" Since I have been on this journey, I have had a few people tell me what they are doing and they wonder why their diet and exercise aren’t working for them.  One gal that comes to kickboxing came up to me before class about a month ago and was startled about my transformation. She told me that she started kickboxing about 2 weeks before I did, but she hadn’t lost any weight. She thought that she had probably gained about 10lbs since starting. She admitted to me that she was happy when I started the class because aside from her I would be another “chunky girl” in the class amongst a bunch of “fit people.”  I was a little disgusted by that comment, but as normal I just laughed it off. Because, you know what, I am not that chunky girl anymore. So I asked her why she thought she had gained weight. She told me before most classes, she would sit at HyVee and have dinner. Okay not a big deal, but it’s what she was eating that got me. She was eating a whole Chinese meal and then coming to workout. At each class, she would be stuffed to the gills with that heavy food in her stomach. Well no wonder, you gained 10lbs. Plus, I watched her during our workouts, she barely makes any effort to break a sweat and try. Everything is done half-assed. So, I thought to myself, and this may be rude and cold hearted, BUT I don’t feel sorry for you. That’s just crazy, don’t you think?

Anyway, I admit I don’t always have all the answers, but I think there are a few common problems that create these kinds of situations.

DENIAL:   If you cheat all the time, you can not expect amazing results.  I am not saying you shouldn’t be able to cheat at all, but be mindful of what you are putting in your mouth. A calorie is a calorie, but…. make better choices. If your diet is perfect except for that Grande Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha with whole milk and whipped cream (approx 390 calories) that you absolutely must suck down in order to make it to work in the morning, then you already know why you aren’t getting results.  I can understand if you don’t like plain black coffee, but you will never get your fat cells to feel sorry for you, they will love you more for not getting rid of them. I understand some things are REALLY hard to give up, but some things have to change or you won’t get the results that you are desperately wanting in the end.  Hoping, that I don't offend anyone, but if this example is you, you might as well just stop what you are doing now and come to terms with being fat and unhealthy. It’s nice to pretend that you will get the results you want even though you think your intentions are good, but it doesn’t always work that way.

TAKE YOUR TIME TO DO IT RIGHT:  You may be assuming you’re doing everything correctly when you haven’t really looked close enough at all the effort it takes to make a lifestyle change.   For example, journal your food intake including a list of all liquids consumed other than water. It’s truly amazing how quickly other liquids other than water add up.  Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. At least 7-8 hours. I know that may be hard, but you have to try.  Develop a good workout schedule and continue to add different type of exercises, so your body doesn’t get used to just one thing all the time. Keep it new and fresh so you don’t get bored as well. Make a list of all medications including birth control, all supplements, and anything else you put in their mouth, even gum and mints. Certain medications have side effects. Know what those are.  Surprisingly, there are calories in vitamins, gums and mints and those can quickly add up as well. Most sugar free gum has at least 5 calories. If you chew gum all day long, there is an extra 15-20 calories added to your daily intake that you don’t think about.

COMMON MISTAKES: One common mistake is eating out too often and not factoring in all the fats and sodium that are added in with the preparation of your food. We are busy all the time, and sometimes are on the go. Understandable, but eating out all the time can "kill" your lifestyle change. Good wholesome meals is what you need. Also, don’t make the assumption that diet soda is fine because it doesn’t contain sugar.  Or you drink fruit juice because it’s “all natural”.  If you think this way, these situations mean that you still have some learning to do and you just need to find a little help or do a little research.  A mistake is only made when you assume you are doing everything right without asking all the questions. So you know what, always ask questions.

Luckily, there are solutions to all of these problems. Face your demons head on. You absolutely have the power to overcome all of these hurdles. It will be hard, but be aggressive and it won’t take you very long to break these bad habits.  To start off, remember to write everything down for a few days and see if there is anything you missed.  I bet that you would be surprised with what you find when you can see all the facts at once.

Good luck!!
